What is black core paper and why does it matter?

Black core paper sandwiches an opaque black layer between two printed faces. The black layer blocks light transmission, which is what stops a card face being visible through the back under bright table lighting. A white or blue core card is cheaper and behaves acceptably in normal light, but black core is the specification for games where a readable card would be a fairness dispute.

Paper or plastic?

Paper decks handle and shuffle the way players expect, and are replaced on a schedule. Plastic decks resist moisture and wear and last far longer, but handle differently. Most floors run paper for the main games and plastic where durability or cleaning matters more than the traditional feel.
